Sometimes you have to just accept that on the day the luck isn’t with you, and the opposition are better, and this was how it was for Kettering Ladies XI today.

The wind, the bounce of the pitch, the delay to that start of the game for no apparent reason and the fact that whatever we tried to do today just didn’t work, were all contributing factors. Being down 2-0 at half time, despite the 2nd goal particularly being an annoying one as it came off the foot of their player, was still something we felt we could come back from, but unfortunately Beth’s motivating team talk at half time just didn’t quite have the desired effect.

The Cambridge side were clearly up for the game and were well practised in terms of positioning and their general game play to Kettering struggled the whole game to just get the ball through. On the odd occasion the ball made it through, it was shut down quickly.

Player of the match, Cath tried in vain to use her strong hit to get the ball up to the forwards but they were just too good at using the pitch to their advantage and closing us down.

So anyway, we lost and likely deserved to lose so some of the highlights of a comedy value to note instead include:

- Beth’s ‘Nora Barry’ socks which seemed to have a life of their own today, falling down a number of times meaning we had to pause.
- Toni sitting on their keeper after having been sandwiched between 3 of them
- Beth again for describing Amy’s saves as ‘salmon-like’ which we still aren’t sure is a compliment or not.
- Elf for rocking the Saturday festival vibes after arriving late
- A number of air swings from a fair few of us when trying to hit the ball.

The best thing about today were, in fact, the teas which were delicious!!
