Kettering succeed in a must win game.

Kettering went into this game knowing that a win would take them 6 points ahead of the bottom of the table, but a loss would take them to the bottom, the teams are that close. We started well on a bitterly cold day closing down the opposition well, passing the ball accurately and quickly, and not allowing Beeston to advance very far past the half way line. Our younger players up front made some fantastic runs but weren't quite linking up perfectly to get the goal. However just past halfway through the first half Anna Ellson went on a fantastic run down the right hand channel, around 2 players, leaving them for dust, and played a beautiful ball in to Sienna McNeil who went 1 on 1 with the keeper and skilfully opened the face of her stick and flicked the ball past the keepers left leg and into the goal. Kettering were on a high at half time. In the second half Beeston seemed to step up a gear and started closing us down a lot quicker. The youth in their team sometimes getting the better of Kettering in terms of speed. One moment of good pressure by Beeston landed the ball at the top of the D to an open player. As Kettering closed down the ball the Beeston player hit her shot which deflected high off the Kettering stick and into the top left corner of the goal. Kettering were not deterred by this and pushed up the pitch for a lengthy spell in the middle for the 2nd half and managed to win a short corner. The ball bounced around in front of the keeper for a few shots but Cath Irvin on the left post managed to squeeze the ball under the keeper and into the goal. Kettering were 2-1 up. The only other chance Beeston had was a short corner which luckily for Kettering was shot too high and disallowed. For the rest of the 2nd half Kettering concentrated on their defence, not letting Beeston into the D to have any more chances. The game ended 2-1 to Kettering which has taken us one more place up the table. One more league game left before Christmas. A win will take us 4 points ahead of 8th place. We will need to bring our A games again!
