First lost for the firsts.

Kettering 1sts knew that Cambridge South 2s would come out hard with Kettering having a target on their backs as top of the table. It was a bad start as Kettering concede in the first minutes which took the whole Kettering team by surprise as they stood in shock. Kettering battled to keep souths at bay with strong defence at the back from Molly Hart, Michelle Tanser and Isla Harvey to deny the game to slip away. Sophie Tomlinson made some excellent saves when South were able to play around the defence and take shots. Kettering were able to respond with Issy Higgs winning short corners, unfortunately, Kettering weren’t able to convert. Cath Irvin was able to win a free hit outside of the D. With frustration at slow taking of free hits and in an attempt to catch Souths defence off guard she took it quickly. One step into the D and bang! Cath’s shot flew into the bottom left corner earning her quite a few man of the match votes. It was clear at half time work was needed if Kettering were going to stay on the game. Sadly, as it is, it didn’t go to plan, with South gaining the lead again. Not all hope was lost as Kettering in the past had come from behind to win. There were promising chances as Ilana Jacobs, who had stepped up to replace Lucy Tanser who had to sub off with an ankle injury, joined forces with Ellie Darnell to create ample opportunity. They were supported by Connie Shingles and Eva Carson who made good runs into spaces to then pass the ball through to the forwards. Again, Kettering had a period of good play with a couple of short corners and Georgia Brophy having a solid shot which was saved. However, Kettering failed to capitalise on their chances and were punished for it during an onslaught of short corners which were expertly defended by Gracie Gault’s speed and tackles along side the rest of Kettering’s defence. Unfortunately, South were able to extend their lead with a flying ball deflected into the net. Kettering attempted to regain a stronghold in the game with Michelle pushing up in an attempt to reign in South. Despite our best efforts the game ended 3-1 to South. As a team there was disappointment but we know that we can use this to help us get back to our winning streak. Also Kettering ladies 1sts must remember the wins before this loss and still remain top the league. Well done to Gracie Gault for getting man off the match for her unbelievable defending and composure in pressured situations. Onwards and upwards!
