So the season finally got going, and despite the covid restrictions in force, Kettering Ladies XI ensured this game was approached with a positive attitude and got going from the first whistle.
The agreement to play in quarters meant that the team could feel assured that there would be plenty of breaks as we all find our way back to full fitness, and run we did! Throughout the entire game, everyone worked for each other. Closing down the ball quickly and creating the space with well-timed runs off the ball. Both teams struggled a bit with anticipating the bounce on what turned out to be a very bouncy pitch, but Kettering didn't let this deter them and fought hard in the tackle, and worked back if the ball was missed or lost.
Captain Amy March observed from the sideline today due to injury but was happy with the performance the team put in today, with coach Rob Mahoney seemingly happy with the overall performance too.
Kettering had a number of opportunities to find that elusive goal, the first of which coming from a hard-hit cross from Charlie James which nearly found the end of Toni Hustwait's stick as a run toward the back post was made. Another came as we won our first penalty corner and Charlie's initial strike was saved by an impressive keeper, but also followed up to save shots from Harriet Goswell and Sophie Reynolds, before the ball being cleared by their defence. A number of opportunities presented themselves as the game continued but the final worth mentioning came as Ellie Mulligan made a fantastic run down the centre of the pitch to receive the ball at the top of the circle. A great position but unfortunately the shot didn't quite pay off. Fantastic running from Georgie Jones and Sophie Richardson on either wing, supported by an attacking-minded Imogen Smith, ensured the ball predominantly stayed in the attacking half of the pitch too; a really important aspect to take forward as we can't score goals if we aren't near the goal!!
It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows however, and there were times where the defence were called into urgent action. Stacy Hall leading the way with some well-read interception and last-man tackles, Gracie Gault making some fine defensive tackles and clearances, Evie Wharf chasing down opposition players Beth Winfield dropping back to support the defence with composure on the ball in tricky areas and Daisy Crossman showing a confident and assured attitude in goal, most definitely getting us out of trouble on a few occasions!
As the game approached the final quarter, the play opened up slightly for both sides as legs became tired, but after such a long time away from the game, the positive is that fitness will come. And importantly, Kettering held strong to keep a clean sheet.
With this game complete, the focus is now on training and fine tuning to ensure we are ready for the start of the league games.
Well played everyone, and bring on Towcester next week!
