For anyone who has been around long enough to play in these intra club league games they will know they are never terribly pleasant to play in. Everyone knows everyone else etc etc and so it proved.

With teams at opposing ends of the table a second team win was probably expected and although that is how it panned out it was with no degree of certainty right until the final whistle.

A very much contrast in styles as the 2s looked (unsuccessfully as it turned out for most of the game) to retain possession and work the ball forwards while the 3s had a more long ball approach to runners up front. The early stages were controlled by the 2s who eventually took the lead when a misplaced pass gave them a sideline and a quick counter saw Jared score at the far post. The highlight of Ethan tripping over in celebration was not lost on the watching 1st team. The only other real highlight was Darren attempting an audacious volley from an aerial which he missed by a country mile/just failed to make contact with (delete as applicable) again much to the amusement of the watching crowds.

On the front foot from the start of the second half Darren redeemed himself by scoring an early short corner that was hammered home/deflected in from going wide (delete as applicable) and that really should have settled the nerves but the 3s weren’t going to lie down. Their chaotic all out attack cause all sorts of problems to the 2s normally frugal back line and a Jake ‘the snake’ Coleman shot found the bottom corner to half the deficit. A few more chances went begging for the 2s in goalmouth melees and then Kethan equalised for the 3s with about 15 to go.

Another scrambled short corner saw Jamie put the 2s back in front but the 3s still had time for a glorious chance but with the goal begging a foot got in the way. Phew.

A win that sees the 2s up to third , just off the pace, and keeps the 3s in the basement but if they play like that after Christmas they should pick up enough points to be safe.

No game now until 18th Jan as Newmarket are skiing /have pitch allocation issues (delete as applicable) so straight in against St Neots to whom we lost 2-0 in September in possibly one of the dullest games ever. (Note to self, must remember to bring no atmosphere after the game).

We may have a friendly at Wellingborough on the 4th but it’s yet to be confirmed so don’t hold your breath.
